About Airport Code Quest

Welcome to Airport Code Quest, your companion on the journey to expand your flying horizons and become a more competent, confident pilot!

Our Story

Airport Code Quest was inspired by a segment on the Opposing Bases Podcast, episode OB351 “Dirty Bippees”, in which Patron Delta Sierra wrote listener feedback to share that he had just earned his Fly Washington Passport flight jacket after visiting his 101st airport in Washington State. Hearing one pilot's three-year journey to fly all over a state and collect stamps along the way sparked a simple, powerful idea: build a digital companion that turns “fly somewhere new” into a quest any pilot can take on.

In honor of that innovative program from the Washington State public airports, we recreated it here as a set of quests, a digital companion to the original physical passport that includes the main quest plus seven sub-quests for each region and the seaplane bases.

The Airport Quest Challenge

Airport Code Quest gamifies the simple goal of flying somewhere new. Quests come in different shapes: visit every public-use airport in your home state, land in each of the lower 48, explore everything within a set distance of your home base, or work through a curated list of airports. There's a quest shape for every kind of pilot, and you can always design your own.

This isn't just about “collecting codes.” It's about expanding your “iceberg.” (Longtime Opposing Bases listeners will recognize the metaphor: your brain is an iceberg, and every new skill or fact is a penguin that takes up space or displaces an older penguin.) Planning for and then flying to new airport environments, runway conditions, and traffic patterns is how you sharpen your skills and discover places you'd otherwise have flown right past.
