New Feature: Range Quests

We've been planning to add range-based quests to Airport Code Quest for a while now. The idea is simple but compelling: pick a home airport, set a distance, and challenge yourself to land at every airport within that radius. It's a perfect way to systematically explore your local flying area while building skills and discovering hidden gems you might otherwise overlook.

It has been on the roadmap from the beginning, but have focused on more broad-reaching challenges.

Then we stumbled across this TikTok from MomOnTheFly, and "eventually" became "now."

The 100 Mile Challenge

MomOnTheFly is documenting her personal quest to visit every airport within 100 miles of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (KBHM). It's exactly the kind of flying adventure we built Airport Code Quest to support: methodical, achievable, and full of the small discoveries that make general aviation so rewarding.

Watching her videos, we were encourage to find other pilots taking the same adventurous approach to fly. And since she is in our "back yard" we knew we had to do it now.

Introducing Range Quests

Range quests let you target every airport within a set distance from a home base. The quest page includes sortable distances showing how far each target airport is from the starting point. Sort by distance to plan efficient flying days, or sort by name to systematically work through your list. As you log flights, airports you've visited get checked off automatically.

We're adding range quests manually for now. If you have an idea for a range quest you'd like to see, reach out through our contact form and we'll do our best to add it. Down the road, we plan to let users submit their own quests directly.

The KBHM 100 Mile Quest

In honor of MomOnTheFly's journey, we've created the first official Range Quest: KBHM 100 Mile Quest.

Whether you're based in Birmingham or just passing through, this quest challenges you to explore the rich general aviation landscape of central Alabama and beyond. From quiet county airports to busy Class C fields, there's a surprising variety packed into that 100-mile circle.

Follow Along

We encourage you to follow MomOnTheFly on TikTok. There's something genuinely inspiring about watching a pilot methodically work through a self-imposed challenge, sharing the ups and downs along the way. It's a reminder that you don't need a cross-country expedition to find adventure. Sometimes the best flying is right in your backyard.

And if her videos inspire you to start your own range quest? Let us know.
